Understanding Your Skin Type & Sun Protection.
A small amount of sun exposure can actually be beneficial for the skin, as it stimulates the natural production of melanin, the pigment responsible for giving our skin its colour and helping protect it from UV radiation.
However, not all skin responds to the sun in the same way. That’s where understanding your skin phototype becomes important.
What Determines Your Skin Phototype?
Your skin phototype is based on how much melanin your skin naturally contains, along with how easily it tans or burns. These factors are largely determined by your natural skin colour and genetic makeup.
The Fitzpatrick Scale Explained.
In 1975, Thomas B. Fitzpatrick developed a classification system that divides into six different phototypes. This scale helps us understand how sensitive each skin type is to sun exposure and how it is likely to respond.
Why Sun Protection Matters for Everyone.
Regardless of your skin type, sun exposure is the leading cause of premature skin ageing. Over time, UV damage can lead to:
Loss of skin structure and elasticity.
Fine lines and wrinkles.
Pigmentation and uneven skin tone.
Increased risk of skin cancers, including melanoma.
A Breakdown of Skin Phototypes.
Phototypes I & II (Very fair skin)
These skin types produce very little melanin, making them highly sensitive to the sun. They tend to burn easily and rarely tan.
Common charactersitics include:
Frequent sunburn.
Development of freckles.
Higher risk of premature ageing.
Recommendations: Minimise sun exposure where possible and always use a high SPF sunscreen.
Phototypes III and IV (Medium Skin Tones)
These skin types can produce more melanin and are more capable of tanning, although burning can still occur,
Common characterisitics include:
Occasional freckles.
Moderate risk of pigmentation (such as melasma).
Slower visible ageing compared to fairer skin.
Recommendations: Enjoy the sun in moderation, but never forget your SPF.
Phototypes V and VI (Darker Skin Types)
These skin types have higher melanin levels and naturally stronger skin structure, which helps retain moisture and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
However they are still prone to:
Hyperpigmentation (Melasma, dark spots)
Uneven skin tone.
Recommendations: Regular exfoliation can support healthy skin renewal, alongside consistent sun protection.
Choosing the Right Sunscreen.
Given the long-term effects of sun exposure, wearing sunscreen daily is essential, no matter your skin type.
While some products include built-in SPF, its always best to ensure you are using adequate protection. A broad spectrum SPF 50+ is generally recommended for optimal defence against UV damage.
Dont forget:
Reapply every 2 hours when outdoors.
Apply generously (most people don’t use enough)
Use daily, even in cooler or cloudy weather.
